31DC2017 - Inspired by a tutorial - Sveta Sanders

Sveta Sanders is one of the true innovators in the nail art world I believe. On so many occasions she has created nail art that has made me go WOW, using new and interesting techniques that I've never seen before.

Today's mani, which is inspired by a tutorial of Sveta's, is one of those techniques.  It really does require the use of gel polishes, so they don't dry too quickly, and you mix them carefully on a mat and then lift the pattern of polish up with a flat brush.  I'm probably not explaining it very well, but in the spirit of the prompt, I also created a tutorial of the technique.  I'll be uploading it to Instagram in about 12 hours, and will add it to this blog post later if you want to pop back and see it.

31DC2017 - Inspired by the supernatural - Wildfire

The count down is on, only two days left to go. Only one more mani that I need to paint and then I did it. I'm looking forward to having a little blogging rest I tell you.

Ok, supernatural day! I always dread this day a little, thinking I'll never come up with something good that I'll like, but just about every time I've managed to pull something out of my butt that I did really like.  Just like this year.

Continuing my Game of Thrones theme from last year where I painted the Night King, this year I have rich green wildfire. BOOOOOOMMM!

I love these sorts of drag marble flames, I've done them before in purple fore the 31 Day Challenge back in 2014. They are so easy to paint and look very effective.

I used two new polishes from Dance Legend in this mani. The base is Pied Piper from the Sparkly collection and the green creme is Vita from the Bi collection. Once the challenge is over I'll get some swatches up of these gorgeous shades.

31DC2017 - Inspired by a Flag - Mars

Only three days to go, we're almost there!  Today is flag day, and really it's probably the one prompt that I struggle with the most.  Every year I want to think of something a little different and quirky, rather than just doing a traditional country flag.

This year I nearly did a rainbow flag, given they whole marriage equality vote thing, but I figured I'd done enough rainbow designs already this challenge.

So what did I end up with? This rather traditional flag pattern featuring red, green and blue.  This flag is apparently the flag of the planet Mars.  The red represents the red dirt, and the green and blue represent the future terra-forming of the planet, with green for plants material and blue for the water. Interesting huh!

I used two different brand scattered holos for this look. Macaron from Picture Polish, and inhale and night rangers from Dance Legend.

31DC2017 - Inspired by an Artwork - Jen Stark

Will this challenge never end. Really I shouldn't complain, it's actually gone really fast I think. I'm actually quite surprised how easily I was able to fall back into the daily blogging routine. But don't get used to it. I'm looking forward to having my evening life back again soon.

Alrightly, today is inspired by artwork day, and I've had this idea saved for quite a long time. I don't remember exactly how or when I stumbled across Jen Stark's Instagram page, but her artwork immediately struck a chord with me. I mean it's drippy rainbows mixed with start black and white drippy's.

I have ti a shot on my nails, and it was really hard to get the drippy look right. The nail canvas is just so small that I struggled a bit. I actually only used sharpie's for this, painted directly onto my nail which were painted with a white base.

I really love this first photo, cause my nails almost blend in to the artwork in the background. It's like some crazy rainbow, black and white squiggly camouflage.

31DC2017 - Inspired by a pattern - Quartrefoil

Back in June, when the Digital Dozen created paper designs, I tried my hand at painted a freehand quartrefoil pattern. I used a combination of red and white polish that time, and what turned out to be very large dotting tools. Back then I said I wanted to try it again, probably in black and white and with smaller dotting tools.

It turns out I didn't feel like doing it in black and white, but instead wanted to do it in blue and white, but I certainly did try it was smaller dotting tools.

I used the dotting tool set that I got from Picture Polish a while back.  To do a design like this you really do need something that give you accurate set sized dots.  I used the small ends of the #D2 and #D3 dotting tools for this.  Compared to the red version, I got double the number of dots in.

I was so thrilled with how this looked in real life. If you didn't look too closely you would think that I had stamped it. Of course, close up nail photos do no favours, so in the photos you can see all the poorly aligned dots, but generally speaking, this is a very easy design for anyone to create.

31DC2017 - Inspired by Fashion

I love that the Emmy awards are always held about a week before the Fashion challenge.  It always provides with me with so many beautiful designer dresses to browse through to find inspiration for nail art.

This year was very easy for me. The instant I saw the dress designed by Rosie Assoulin and worn by Tessa Thompson I new I had to create the matching nail art. The stunning oil slick technicolour dress looks amazing in the pictures and reflects so much rich jewel metallic colours.

For my nails, I wanted to give the appearance of the pleated fabric as well as showing the shiny metallic bright colours.  To create the pleated appearance, I applied some thin straight nail vinyls onto my base coat.  Keeping them in place, I applied a layer of black nail polish.  After that was dry I applied a layer of Dance Legend Black glitter base polish, as I knew I have always been able to get a good metallic finish on that polish using chrome powers.  I then just rubbed four different chrome colours from What's up nails into the ridged finish.

I'm not used to leaving the nail vinyls in place on my nails, but they didn't lift and actually worked incredibly well for this design.
